As we have nearly thirty layers of dead skin cells clogging in the pores, exfoliation plays a key part in achieving a beautiful skin. Exfoliation works by removing these dead skin cells from the outer layer of our skin (called the epidermis), making your skin smooth and radiant, with even skin tone. It also improves the health of your skin by improving your blood circulation and lymph nodes. And by using Moroccan Black Soap (Savon Noir Morocain), you can achieve a clear, beautiful skin that you desire.

Moroccan Black Soap may be found with various exotic scents such as Eucalyptus, Jasmine, and Orange Blossoms or even with Argan Oil. This soap is made with pure, natural, and organic ingredients. This product contains no polyethylene glycol, mineral oils, silicon, and preservatives from parabens. Formulated with base oils of Argan and olive that is rich in vitamin E, this soap is high in emollients and moisturizing properties that suitable for all skin types. Even aging, mature skin can definitely benefit the high potency of the oils that can visibly diminish the wrinkles from your face.

Extraordinarily rich in tocopherols (70.2mg per 100g), phenols and phenolic acid, carotenes, squalene, essential fatty acids, with 80% of unsaturated fatty acids, this oil is much more potent than olive oil.

Traditionally, the women of Berber tribes collect the undigested pits from goats’ waste as the goats are let freely to graze and eat the fruits. Due to its nature highly prized by many. UNESCO has taken a life – changing step in protection and conserving the population of Argan tree while providing it as a source of income for the women in Argan oil production by using machines in processing the oil directly harvested from the tree.

To reap up the potency of Argan oil, use the Moroccan Black Soap in conjunction with Kessa Royal Exfoliating Glove (Kessa, or kesse is glove in Arabic, or ‘gant de gommage’ in French). Apply the black soap when your skin to be warm and moist in circular movement. Leave on the soap for five and ten minutes as the soap works onto your skin, unclogging the pores with its positive benefits. Rinse thoroughly. Then you use the Exfoliating Glove to rub in vertical motion to remove the dead skin cells, toxins and impurities. Depending on how you rub it, you can see the dead skin shed from your face.

Make it as a part of your beauty routine on weekly basis for best results. With this exfoliating process you can achieve a radiant, healthy skin.

Aromatherapy – Make Your Own in Minutes For Pennies

This entry was posted in News on by .

Perhaps the best thing about aromatherapy is that it is so easy and pleasurable to engage in; both for the creator of the concoction and most assuredly for the client. Few people will complain about receiving a prescription to bathe with scented oils or apply a fragrant body oil; two of the most popular aromatherapy techniques.

If you are considering starting an aromatherapy business for yourself–before you get started in this astonishing world of scent, it is important that you find out what practicing aromatherapists are doing so you can find that perfect niche for yourself.

Today many herbalists, body workers, cosmetologists, chiropractors and other holistic healers are discovering how multifaceted and versatile the healing art of aromatherapy is. To this end they are able to enrich their practices by introducing these pure essential oils for a compendium of maladies like: the altering of moods, stirring memories, arousing sexual desire and generally improving the quality of life. Many others concentrate on enhancing their client’s beauty and longevity by offering them a wide variety of healing beauty products.

The majority of our nation today is influenced by the economy–finding most people today going both ‘green’ and back-to-basics. However, as natural as they wish they could be, the majority live in a stressful world and are constantly on the lookout for natural alternatives for health challenges like depression, anxiety, fear, grief, loneliness, mental fatigue, mind fog, insomnia, PMS symptoms and so many more. The peace and tranquility that should manifest themselves as normal attributes are often weighed down by environmental factors such as stress in the workplace or–even worse–unemployment. Many others suffer from social isolation, poverty, chemicals and toxins or even poor diet and countless more conditions.

Aromatherapy is BIG business today and at the end of this article you can be assured that we keep our promise that you will never have to pay mega-bucks again! This article is more than an overview of this ancient 3000+ year old art. As you stroll down Lavender Lane’s aromatic healing path with us you will discover how–for more than a quarter-of-a-century we have been teaching and sharing how you can create a compendium of natural and therapeutic aromatherapy concoctions in mere ‘minutes for pennies’. Plus, should you desire to retail your products at craft fairs or onto store shelves or in spas or even mail order like us; we will happily show you how. We will also share with you one of the most important phases of your marketing–how to package your concoctions–making you appear as professional as is your creation.

First, here is a ‘crash course’ on aromatherapy that the ‘newbie’ should at least have some concept of. Each essential oil contains numberless chemical components. To best illustrate a comparison, take an apple for instance. FACT: One, whole, clean, fresh apple contains over 10,000 nutrients in combinations of antioxidants, phytochemicals (plant vitamins) enzymes and more. Yet science so far has only recognized a fraction of them, and until more are discovered; they haven’t got a clue what the rest of them are or what they do–and apples have been around since the beginning. Aromatherapy (the art of implementing an essential oil to this end or that) has been around since people have. Nevertheless, each type of essential oil is composed of many different aromatic molecules of which more than 30,000 have been identified and named, and it is common for a single essential oil to contain one hundred different aromatic molecules. One can only fathom their countless true complexities and their inconceivable properties or restorative benefits.

Exactly how aromatherapy works is still unclear. What we do know is that merely smelling a fragrance can influence us physically and emotionally by altering hormone production, brain chemistry, stress levels and general metabolism..

An ‘essential oil’—or the ‘soul’ of the plant if you will, is 50 times more concentrated than that of the herb or flower it was carefully extracted from. Essential oils give plants their characteristic odors, enabling us to take deep drafts of a fragrant rose bloom or drink in the perfume of lilacs and lavender. It is because essential oils are by their very nature aromatic, that the therapy involving their use has been christened “Aromatherapy.” And whether a person is looking to enhance their beauty, relieve pain, increase energy, reduce stress, grow hair, promote sleep, heal wounds, evoke special emotions, or even kill fleas–there is an essential oil for all these and countless other conditions.

BEAUTY SECRETS? Billions of dollars a year are spent every year by consumers who are trying to slow down the aging process–or at least cling to as youthful an appearance as they can for as long as they can. The face is usually the most exposed part of the body–bombarded by heat, cold, drying, sweating, wrinkling, dirt, smoke and a world of other invisible toxins. Today especially, stress is on the increase, having a huge impact on most people’s lives. And as such, takes a great toll on the body which is very much mirrored in the face. If the consumer is looking to enhance their beauty they must take special care of it and there is a compendium of products that can be incorporated into their regime–each of which contains the right essential oil(s) to meet their purpose.

These products are found in the forms of cleansers, steams, exfoliants, masques, toners, floral waters, moisturizers, bath oils, massage oils, and more. When these pure essential oils are added into these mediums (carrier oils, waxes, sea salt, lotions, floral waters, butters, soaps, etc.) the essential oils penetrate to the dermal layer of the skin where new cells are developing. And depending upon which essential oil is used in which application, their varied attributes will either stimulate and regenerate skin cells, reduce bacterial and fungal infections such as acne and other related skin problems, soothe delicate, sensitive, inflamed skin, promote the release and removal of metabolic waste products, and produce healthy skin cells quickly following sun damage, burns, wrinkles or healing of wounds. Additionally, these essential oils contain plant “hormones” that help balance and alleviate hormonally related skin problems. When incorporated into a bath or massage, or through inhalation, these essential oils may be of aid in the relief of muscle pain, menstruation, lung congestion, insomnia, fever, headaches, infections, indigestion, constipation, etc.

Scent and the psyche too is nothing new. The manipulating of fragrance to affect the emotions dates back to the ancients and today is no different. According to a 1992 issue of the British Journal of Occupational Therapy, it describes the potential of aromatherapy to “promote health and well-being”. In hospital environments, patients receive aid through massage, inhalation, baths, compresses, creams and lotions. According to the journal’s extensive list of potential uses, aromatherapy can diminish stress, sedate, relieve depression, invigorate, promote activity and alertness, stimulate sensory awareness, facilitate interaction and communication, treat certain medical problems and provide pain relief.

Scent is an integral part of society. From the time we get up we are accustomed to bathing or showering with a scented body soap or gel, a fragranced shampoo and/or conditioner, followed by a scented deodorant and then perhaps by a scented after-shave, perfume or cologne. Our cleaning supplies are laden with scent to make our clothes, our dishes and our houses smell fresh and clean. We buy scented candles, incense, oil lamps and potpourris that we may be surrounded by aromas. Yet—these are probably ALL synthetic in nature.

“Pure” essential oils are extracted right from the plant, wherein any allergies usually associated with fragrance are almost non-existent. It is the “synthetic” fragrances that create many problems. With the rise of synthetic chemicals, and the increased strength of these fragrances, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration estimates that 4,000 different chemicals are currently used in fragrances–most of which are in perfumes and colognes and is on the increase. The problem is that through the inhalation of “synthetics”—many suffer a wide range of physical difficulties from sinus pain to anaphylactic shock and seizures. This fact alone should be reason enough to educate people toward the incorporation of “pure essential oils” over synthetics–especially if they could make their own sweet scented body and skin care products as well as their own therapeutic concoctions.

NOTE: Please be assured that there is MUCH ADULTERATION out there due to a general lack of education coupled with greed as to essential oils versus the synthetic fragrance oils–and that is why it is doubly important that YOU, John & Jane-Q-Public become educated of these important differences.

So that the beginner will not be overwhelmed or confused as to how aromatherapy works–here is an easy to visualize, easy to understand example of how these pure healing oils get into the blood-stream–do their thing–and get out. We all know how good garlic is for the body–curing a compendium of ills. Take a clove of garlic, cut it in half and rub the soles of your feet a couple of times. Put your socks and shoes on and go about your business. In about 3 hours you can taste it. That’s it. When you bathe, your body’s pores open to receive these healing oils, as does your body react accordingly through massage or through inhalation. Studies with brain wave frequency has shown that smelling Lavender increases the alpha waves in the back of the head, which are associated with relaxation. The fragrance of Jasmine increases beta waves in the front of the head, which is associated with a more alert state.

Aromatherapy is sweeping the world like wildfire and as we journey through this enlightening article; if the reader believes that this healing skill is something that they would like to incorporate into their lives as well as that of others; we highly recommend you consider this avenue.

There has been a good deal of information passed on to you so far and before you view the essential oil list, the intention of this article is to share with its readers that they or their families or friends may seek aromatherapy to allay their respective problems, and that they absolutely can–and never need pay mega-bucks again for these therapeutic and exotic preparations.

The following is but a smattering of the most commonly used essential oils and some of their numerous uses. Note: These oils are recommended for external use only.

• LAVENDER for stress, muscle pain, headaches, prevents scarring, stretch marks and has a reputation for slowing wrinkles, etc.

• ORANGE for high blood pressure, treating flu, colds, congestion and for killing fleas…

• ROSE GERANIUM for reducing inflammation, infection, eczema, acne, burn injuries, scarring, stretch marks, regulation blood pressure, etc.

• PEPPERMINT for headaches, muscle spasms, inflammation, indigestion, nausea, congestion, etc.

• ROSEMARY for memory, poor circulation, low blood pressure, sore muscles, rheumatism, cellulite, etc. (And-balding. However, you have to have a little life left up there.)

• EUCALYPTUS for sinus & throat infection, fever, flu, herpes, acne, boils, insect bites, lice, herpes, vapor rubs, aftershaves, colognes, etc.

• LEMON oil for viral & bacterial infections, hypertension, water retention, weight gain, bruises, increasing general well-being, etc.

• TEA TREE oil for insect bites, cuts, sunburn, shingles, candida, diaper rash, earaches, acne, paper cuts, head lice, abrasions, scalds, herpes lesions, ringworm, athlete’s foot, boils, eczema, and much, much more.

SAFETY: Overexposure to essential oils, either through the skin or by nose, can result in nausea, headache, skin irritation, emotional unease, or an overall “spaced out” feeling. Getting some fresh air will help you to overcome these symptoms.

Just to show you how easy recipes can be–here are some examples:

For thousands of years the ancients established elaborate rituals that combine hot and cold baths, ointments and aromatic massages.

1 cup Dead Sea Salt (course or fine grind).

Add 25-35 drops of essential oil or oils depending upon what therapeutic oils you have chosen for what malady. If you have chosen a blend you need to consider that each oil has a high-note, middle-note or base note which is the evaporation time; so the end scent may change from what you smell during preparation.

1 tablespoon ‘Turkey Red’ oil which is water-soluble. Almost all oils float, but not this one. Instead it will marry with the bath water and soothe and moisturize your body.

If you choose to color your salts use a few drops of food-safe food coloring until the desired color is attained.

If you choose to make a fine grind all you need to do is put the salts in your blender and blend. It won’t hurt your blender a bit and I prefer to grind before I add the other ingredients.

Mix everything well and package. Be sure to use a pretty, wide-mouthed container and then package accordingly. Remember–presentation is as important as is the creation itself.

Depending how much water is in the tub–add 1/2 to 1 cup per bath. Once mixed in the bath, the salt will melt, the color will dissipate, the ‘Turkey Red’ oil will soothe and moisturize, and the essential oils will penetrate your body within minutes. Additionally, by the very inhalation of the chosen oil(s) and the fragrance, it will either relax your or invigorate you. This application is wonderful because your skin is the largest organ of your body.

For those who prefer showers, these are great exfoliants. (Do not use on the face).

To 1 cup of fine Dead Sea salt add 25-35 drops of essential(s) and enough carrier oil (Safflower, Grapeseed, Olive, Turkey Red, etc.) to totally moisten the salt. You don’t want it too dry and you don’t want it too runny. Rub on to loosen all those dead cells and invigorate the new ones, then wash off.

Using the above recipe, instead of salt use raw sugar. We use turbinado.

To 16 ounces of carrier oil (Turkey Red, Sweet Almond, Grapeseed, etc.) add approximately 160 to 200 drops (total) of essential oil or oils. This equates to 16-20 drops per ounce. Shake well and let the oils marry overnight. For a bath oil use approximately 1/4 cup of oil. The carrier oils may be mixed and matched.

As we hope you have discovered, most of these natural, healing and therapeutic creations are very simple to make for you and your family and friends–and they make awesome gifts too.

A Few Basic Facts That We Ought to Learn About Sodium Hydroxide

This entry was posted in News on by .

Sodium hydroxide, a white crystalline substance, is also known in other terms such as lye, caustic soda, white caustic, soda lye, and sodium hydrate. Its chemical formula is NaOH, and it is known to be corrosive as well as soluble in water, alcohol, and glycerin.

The chemical may sound unfamiliar to you but it can be found in household products such as oven cleaners and drain cleaners. The thing about cleaners that contain the substance is that they tend to turn fats into soap, making them efficient in removing clogs from pipes which are usually a mixture of fats and grease.

Its value does not end in being found in these household products, though. It is valuable in many other ways just like its role in the paper industry where it is used to break down lignin in wood. Lignin holds together cellulose fibers in wood, and its removal is responsible for having the freed cellulose fibers form into paper. So you can now imagine how important the substance in the paper industry is.

Besides being a contributor to paper production, the substance is also of value to the food industry. It plays a vital role in chocolate and cocoa processing, caramel coloring production, chemical peeling of fruits and vegetables, and poultry scalding. The unique crust of the German pretzels also owes something to sodium hydroxide as they are poached in a cold solution of the substance first before baking. Moreover, the gelling of egg whites in Century production is caused by the substance.

The chemical is also used in manufacturing other chemicals, where it is commonly used in acid neutralization, pH control, and off-gas scrubbing. It is also used to remove acidic contaminants in the processing of oil and gas, thus making it valuable to the petroleum and natural gas industry.

It is also used in water treatment, glass making, cotton mercerizing and scouring, rubber reclamation, mining, laundering and bleaching, metal processing and cleaning, oxide coating, electroplating, and electrolytic extracting. Moreover, it is both available in solid form just like chips, sticks, and pellets, and in solutions. Other factors that contribute to its being widely used are its being cheap and being easy to detect and dispose.

You have learned the different uses of caustic soda, but it is also important to learn the first aid measures that can be taken just in case accidents relating to the storage and handling of the substance take place. If it comes into contact with the skin, the affected part of the skin must be flushed with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. If it is with the eyes, the eyes must also be flushed with water for at least 15 minutes. If someone swallows a solution of the substance, never induce vomiting. What should be done instead is to have the person rinse their mouth thoroughly with water. Also, the person must be given with 240 to 300 ml. of water to drink.

Although first aid measures can be taken when accidents take place, it is always better to prevent these accidents from taking place as much as possible. This can be achieved by maintaining proper storage and use of the substance. Its container must be tightly closed and it must be stored in cool, dry, and ventilated area. When handling the chemical, protective equipment must be worn, including protective eyeglasses and gloves.

These are just some of the basic things that you need to know about sodium hydroxide. Being informed about its uses will make us appreciate its importance in our day-to-day living and being informed about its proper use will help us prevent accidents from happening.

Top 10 Doris Day Movies

This entry was posted in News on by .

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1922, Doris Day aspired to be a professional dancer but a car accident forced her to reassess her career as she spent part of her teenage years in a wheel chair recovering. Taking to singing on radio instead it wasn’t until 1948 that Doris made her first movie as Miss Georgia Garrett in “It’s Magic” (originally known as “Romance on the High Seas”). And so her movie career began which would span 20 years and 39 movies before she left the big screen and went to the small screen with her TV show “The Doris Day Show” which ran from 1968 – 1973.

Often regarded as the “eternal virgin” thanks mainly to a series of movies where the subject of sex was taboo, Day was in fact a very accomplished actress capable of delivering comedy, romance as well as heavy drama and of course was able to sing and dance as well. A seriously well rounded star who was top box-office star for 1963 and is often regarded as the ‘all-time’ top female box office star.

During her career she starred opposite some of Hollywood’s major stars such as Gordon MacRae, David Niven, Clark Gable, Kirk Douglas, James Stewart, Gig Young, Howard Keel, James Garner, Jack Lemmon and of course Rock Husdon whose trio of movies that they made together are some of her most popular.

Whilst it’s fair to say that some of Doris Day’s movies were remarkably similar with a recurring theme of being either a career minded young woman or duped by a man they worked well and made for some marvelous movies made memorable usually by at least one musical scene showcasing Day’s wonderful singing voice.

From out of her 39 movies it is actually quite difficult to narrow it down to just 10 but here is my personal choice for the “Top 10 Doris Day Movies”.

#10 Teacher’s Pet (1958)

The first movie to see what would become a very familiar storyline as Doris Day plays a career minded woman duped by a man pretending to be someone else. Here we watch Doris Day play Erica Stone a lecturer in journalism who ends up being duped by James Gannon (Clark Gable) a bit city newspaper editor who initially wants to give Stone a piece of his mind but ends up falling for her. The trouble is he pretends to be someone else when they meet and you know it will cause problem when his true identity is revealed.

Although “Teacher’s Pet” would be the first of these romantic-comedies which featured very similar storylines it was noticeable for the fact that Doris Day played things straight, whilst still delivering that charming and lovable performance which would fill many of these romantic comedies. Instead we had Clark Gable delivering the comedy as James Gannon with a wonderful array of face pulling with makes “Teacher’s Pet” a hugely enjoyable movie.

#9 Young Man With a Horn (1950)

In all fairness “Young Man With a Horn” or “Young Man of Music” as it is also known is not really a Doris Day movie rather than a Kirk Douglas movie with Doris Day in a supporting role. But the story of Rick Martin (Kirk Douglas) who learns to play the trumpet from legendary musician Art Hazzard and goes on to become a troubled star musician is a brilliant movie full of drama, emotion and music as well as a little comedy.

It is a brilliant performance from Kirk Douglas in the lead role but Doris Day is equally as good even in the lesser role of songstress Jo Jordan who ends up becoming a close friend to Rick. Although she only gets to sing 4 songs in the movie each one is beautiful done and in between each of these songs Day shows what a talented actress she is, so natural in every scene.

#8 It Happened to Jane (1959)

In the same year that Doris Day would make her first movie with Rock Hudson she also made another romantic comedy, this time with Jack Lemmon and Ernie Kovacs. In “It Happened to Jane” Doris plays Jane Osgood a career minded mother who breeds and sells lobsters who finds herself taking on the might of Harry Foster Malone (Ernie Kovacs) the owner of a train line which cost her a lot of money in dead lobsters. With the help of her best friend, lawyer George Denham (Jack Lemmon) she battles Malone in anyway she can but despite her troubles things may turn out alright in more sense than one.

With the exception of “Teacher’s Pet” prior to “It Happened to Jane” the majority of Doris Day’s romantic movies had largely been largely musicals. But here we had Day showing her ability in a more straight forward romantic comedy with barely a musical scene in sight, except for one heavily manufactured one featuring “Be Prepared”. What makes this movie feature in my “Top 10 Doris Day Movies” is the combination of Doris Day and Jack Lemmon who between them light up the screen with a perfect amount of comedy.

#7 The Thrill of It All (1963)

“The Thrill of It All” would be the first of Doris Day and James Garner’s 2 movies together and see once more Doris Day taking on a familiar role of a house wife and mother. During a dinner party Beverly Boyer (Doris Day), wife of obstetrician Gerald (James Garner), regales the hosts with a tale about how she used ‘Happy Soap’ to wash her children’s hair, as it happens her hosts are the owners of ‘Happy Soap’. Before she knows it Beverly is the new face of ‘Happy Soap’ making adverts, appearing on bill boards and being wined and dined at big socials. All of which ends up annoying Gerald who barely sees his wife causing a rift in their happy marriage.

Although their second movie together, “Move Over, Darling” would end up a bigger box-office success I prefer “The Thrill of It All” out of Doris Day and James Garner’s 2 movies together. It’s for the most rather routine with Doris Day playing that beautiful and slightly kooky house wife to James Garner’s tall dark and handsome husband but it’s full of memorable, funny scenes. The fake posing for the billboard and the swimming pool full of suds are two of just many innocently amusing moments in a movie full of them.

#6 On Moonlight Bay (1951)

In her 20 year movie career and despite making several movies which used the same sort of storyline Doris Day only made one sequel which was “By the Light of the Silvery Moon”. The predecessor to it was the beautifully titled “On Moonlight Bay” which saw Day take on the role of Marjie Winfield a tomboy who falls for Bill Sherman (Gordon MacRae). The trouble is that Bill has some unorthodox views on relationships and marriage and also on a few other things which end up annoying Marjie’s father George.

Although “On Moonlight Bay” has a storyline, in fact it has a few storylines it is very much a musical with numerous musical moments featuring either the wonderful Doris Day or the equally wonderful Gordon MacRae and often together. But it is the way everything comes together to make a thoroughly pleasant and charming movie, completely innocent and a lot of fun.

#5 The Pajama Game (1957)

This would be the last of Doris Day’s movies which were firstly musical and drama second but it is surprisingly good fun. Set in the Sleeptite Pajama Factory Doris plays Babe Williams a union rep who finds herself coming up against new superintendent Sid Sorokin (John Raitt) who falls head over heels for her, except business and pleasure start to make things rather messy especially as Babe’s fellow workers want a rise.

“The Pajama Game” has it roots as a Broadway musical and what makes the screen version work is that it feels like you are watching a stage musical. With many of the Broadway cast reprising their roles for the movie and with a vibrant styling which really brings it to life it is a very entertaining movie. And of course it features Doris Day at her feisty best as she plays up against John Raitt whilst delivering plenty of cheerful musical numbers.

#4 Love Me or Leave Me (1955)

During her career Doris Day performed in a few movies which were based or inspired by real people, in “Love Me or Leave Me” she stars as Ruth Etting in a fictionalized account of the jazz singer’s life. Having been spotted by Chicago hood Marty Snyder (James Cagney) Ruth goes from a wannabee singer to a major star, but with Snyder controlling her life the public image Ruth presented was vastly different to her unhappy private one.

What makes Doris Day’s performance in “Love Me or Leave Me” so brilliant comes in hindsight of information that Doris Day revealed in her autobiography. Day herself suffered an unhappy marriage to Martin Melcher who basically controlled her life and much of which almost mirrors what you watch in “Love Me or Leave Me”. As such there is a real sense of pain and emotion in many of the scenes in the movie where Snyder inflicts his rage and control over Ruth. Plus of course being a movie about a singer means we get plenty of brilliant musical moments including renditions of “Ten Cents a Dance” and “I’ll Never Stop Loving You”.

#3 By the Light of the Silvery Moon (1953)

As already mentioned “By the Light of the Silvery Moon” is the equally beautifully titled sequel to “On Moonlight Bay” and follows a very similar storyline with Marjie Winfield still having relationship issues with Bill who having agreed to marry her before heading off to war returns not quite ready to walk down the aisle. And that’s not the only problem as other member’s of the Winfield household are having a few issues.

To many “By the Light of the Silvery Moon” is inferior to “on Moonlight Bay” and basically just rehashes the whole storyline, which in all fairness it does. But to me it has a lot more charm especially with the wintry setting and memorable ending on the frozen pond with a wonderful family sing-a-long. It also helps that Day is at her cutest best as Marjie easy on the eyes and easy to fall in love with.

#2 Pillow Talk (1959)

It may come as a surprise to some but Doris Day and Rock Hudson only made 3 movie together, although it often feels like more because Day made several similar movies all of with quite similar handsome stars. Their first movie together was “Pillow Talk” with saw Day playing Jan Morrow who shares a party phone line with Brad Allen (Rock Hudson) much to her annoyance as he hogs the line with calls to and from various women. But when Allen finds himself in the company of Morrow he has a bit of fun pretending to be an out of town Texan called Rex Stetson, except what started as a bit of fun turns into more when they genuinely fall for each other.

As already mentioned Doris Day made several similar movies and here again we see her being duped by a man pretending to be someone else. It is the best version of this type of storyline thanks to the amazing chemistry between Doris Day and Rock Hudson making it extremely funny and quite romantic, which in an ironic way is quite funny thanks to certain revelations about both of the stars. And despite the concept of Day being duped by another man had already been done it is the one most people remember with Day delivering her kooky, face pulling comedy to the max whilst Hudson charms his way through every scene.

#1 Calamity Jane (1953)

And finally my number 1 Doris Day movie in my list of “Top 10 Doris Day Movies” and it has to be the award winning “Calamity Jane”. In “Calamity Jane” Doris Day stars as Jane a feisty Indian tracker in the town of Deadwood who likes to boast a little too much. When the owner of the local saloon is desperate to get someone to perform, Jane boasts she can bring back acclaimed stage performer Adelaid Adams from Chicago to perform on their small stage. But having headed off to Chicago Jane mistakes Adelaid’s maid Kate for the big star and returns with her instead. Well it all comes out that Jane didn’t bring back Adelaid but her and Kate become friends leaving to a bit of unexpected rivalry in the romantic department.

From the opening scene with the lively “The Deadwood Stage (Whip-Crack-Away)” right through to the credits “Calamity Jane” is an out and out classic musical full of big musical song and dance numbers which makes the storyline almost unimportant despite not being that bad. But why “Calamity Jane” is my number 1 movie is because it showcases everyone of Doris Day’s wonderful talents from dancing, singing, comedy as well as a touch of drama and alongside solid performances from Howard Keel, Allyn Ann McLerie and Philip Carey there is not a single dull moment in it’s entire length.

How to Make Natural Candles – Choosing the Best Wax For Making Candles at Home

This entry was posted in News on by .

There are several natural waxes to choose from for your homemade candle.

While paraffin may be natural in that it’s a petroleum-based wax it has been shown to be not so healthy & doesn’t burn clean so I think we can eliminate this wax.

Healthier natural candle waxes are Palm, Beeswax, and Soy & Ghee.

Let’s check out some pros & cons of each of these waxes.

Palm in made from the wax of the berry of the Palm tree. It’s white, all natural, renewable & clean burning.

Palm wax has a unique crystalline structure that is very attractive.

It can hold a very high scent load. Some palm waxes can hold up to twice as much scent as paraffin or soy wax.

Palm wax comes in granular form, is very easy to work with & it pools evenly when lit. It doesn’t need any additives & it cleans up easily with soap & warm water.

Cons of palm wax; the cost of palm wax is a slightly more than Soy wax.

Turning to Soy candle making, this wax has lots of Pros too. It burns long, cool & clean.

Here is a list of advantages a manufacturer gives about their soy wax:

o Made with pure, 100% natural soybeans

o Longer, cooler and cleaner burning without soot buildup

o Made in the USA with domestically grown crops

o Produced containing NO Genetically Modified Material

o Manufactured meeting FDA and Kosher standards

o Easy to clean up with soap and hot water eliminating solvents

o Renewable sustainable resources requiring plant growth

o Biodegradable and free from pesticides and herbicides

o Very stable allowing for long shelf life

o Not subject to animal testing

Cons of soy candles:

It’s stated by some manufactures that soy candles are produced containing no Genetically Modified Material. For most soy waxes this is only true because after processing there is no DNA in the wax left to assess whether the soy beans used were GMO or not. In the United States in 2002, 98% of the soybean harvest was either genetically modified (GMO) or non-GMO mixed in with GMO soybeans. The only reliable source of non-GMO soybeans are Identity Preserved or Certified Organic, these are very few. This means buying soy wax that is not Identity Preserved or certified organic is supporting the biotech industry. This is a disadvantage of soy wax in my opinion. Also I feel soy candles made from GMO soybeans can’t really be called “natural” as their DNA was humanly modified, the fact that the DNA was later removed doesn’t negate that.

Now lets look at Beeswax which has been used for candles since ancient times.

It burns slow & clean & has its own sweet fragrance.

It gives of more light & heat than other waxes & is virtually drip less.

Beeswax is the only fuel to emit negative ions when burning & this process cleans the air of positive ions such as dust, odors, toxins, pollen, mold, dust mites feces, and viruses.

Lighting a beeswax candle inspires a spiritual feeling; they have traditionally been the candles of choice in many churches.

Using a sheet of beeswax & rolling it up with a wick inside is such a simple way to start making candles, a pair of scissors are the only equipment needed. Beeswax candle making with sheets is child’s play.

Poured beeswax candles are just as easy to make as candles make with other waxes.

One con for beeswax is that the price is significantly more than other waxes but this is balanced by the quality it has of burning slower & lasting longer than other waxes. Beeswax can be added to other waxes to increase their burn time. Beeswax candles have their own natural sweet fragrance with which only some aromas will nicely blend. Beeswax can be bought in either a yellow or white color. Some white beeswax may have been bleached & have chemicals added, best check with the supplier.

Bayberry wax is an aromatic greenish vegetable wax that is removed from the surface of the Bayberry by boiling the berries in water and skimming the wax from the surface. Burning a Bayberry candle to the nub during the holidays is a 300-year tradition supposed to bring good luck in the coming year. Bayberry wax is recommended for making dipped tapers only & may not burn well as votive, tea-light or pillar candles.

Bayberry wax costs about 4 times that of Beeswax. It takes 15 pounds of Bayberries to make one pound of wax. It has a warm, earthy fragrance reminiscent of newly mown hay, and dries to a lovely olive green color. A small amount can be added to other waxes to make them harder & impart its green color. This is a pro as there are no other natural colorants for candles apart from the yellow of the beeswax. All natural candles, that is totally natural candles, are white unless they have beeswax or bayberry wax added.

Ghee lamps have traditionally been used by Sikhs & Hindus for thousands of years as a spiritual practice. Lighting the light dispels darkness & brings comfort, hope & peace. Lighting a light with cow ghee specifically is said to ensure radiance & heavenly bliss, prosperity, health & happiness.

Ghee is made from unsalted clarified butter. It is easy to make for one’s self at home or one can buy it from the grocery store. Organic ghee is available. Once one learns to make a container candle one can make a ghee candle. Securing the wick in the middle of the container without glue is the trick. Traditionally the receptacle of the ghee is earthen mud, silver, gold or brass, never stainless steel. The wick traditionally is laid on the bottom of the container & is propped up on the side of the lamp rather than standing up straight in the middle. I have bought a ghee candle made in a small glass jar with a lid that has a central wick & it works fine. I would be very careful about propping the wick on the side of a glass container. Ghee is very soft at room temperature & a liquid when heated so it needs a container. My ghee candle burns without a ghee smell & gives a very sweet feeling. Now I know how to wick the jar I can keep renewing the candle by adding ghee & wicks or I can make a much bigger one that burns longer for the same price as my little store bought candle.

Whichever material you use for your candle, don’t let having to decide which wax delay you making one! Choose a wax & make a candle, its fun, can save you money & using the candles brings bliss.

What to Expect From Pottery Making Classes

This entry was posted in News on by .

Making things with your hands can be incredibly fulfilling. It can really bring out your creativity, and teach you things about yourself. Often, the best hands-on hobbies to get involved in are those that are related to some of your other hobbies or interests. In the case of those who collect figurines and other ceramics, signing up for pottery making classes can be a great idea!

Pottery making classes are not easy. There is a reason why collectibles are collectibles and why certain pieces are priced the way they are. It takes a long time to create a masterpiece, but once it is created, the sense of accomplishment you will feel will be incomparable to anything else in this world. That being said, here is what you can expect from pottery making classes.

1) Wear Comfortable Clothes

Since you will be sitting down in front of a wheel for a couple of hours at a time, it is important that you wear something comfortable. Not to mention something that can get dirty. Working with clay is very messy, so don’t bring your favorite sweater!

2) You Will Learn About Art

Apart from learning how to make art, you will also learn about art. Pottery has gone through many trends, and these can be seen in how the art has changed throughout history. As you sit through your classes, the teacher is likely to explain a thing or two about the different periods in art history.

3) You Will Learn the Lingo

While the end goal is to create something functional, you are still learning a skill for which there is a specific jargon. Terms like wedging, shaping, raising, centering, are all things you will learn in your very first lesson. What does it mean to throw a wheel exactly? This question will be answered before you even touch clay.

4) It is Not Easy

Though experts make it look easy, it really isn’t. Clay is soft and malleable, which means you can shape it into anything, but that also means it is difficult to control in the beginning since you have to find the right balance of pressure and spinning.

Remember, never judge your overall skill based on the first of your pottery making classes. It usually takes a beginner two to three classes to get used to working with the potter’s wheel and to figure out just how much pressure to use. Don’t worry, though, teachers often go slow and persistence always pays off!

Importance of Choosing the Right Bath Soap

This entry was posted in News on by .

Showering and bathing is a part of daily life. Most people wake up in the morning, lather themselves up in the shower, rinse, and set out to start the day. However, it is good to be informed about the bath products we are using on a daily basis, and put some thought into selecting the best ones. Choosing the right bath soap is especially important since it regularly comes into contact with your skin.

Common bath soaps come in bar and liquid form. The primary purpose of bath soap is to cleanse, but it should also sooth the skin and help it remain healthy. The majority of bath soaps on the market today are designed to target specific skin issues, like dry skin. Unfortunately, the ingredient list found on most soap is not very appealing. Soaps are usually composed of two main ingredients which are alkali and animal or vegetable fat. Most bath soaps on the market also contain synthetic ingredients or alcohols. Some commonly used chemicals found in bath care products have been proven to have side effects. Since anything coming into contact with the skin can ultimately be absorbed, and affect the body, it is wise to be aware of what is in the products we are using. The facts about standard bath soap have led some to choose organic soap instead.

Those with sensitive skin, and also those wanting to limit their exposure to chemicals benefit from using organic soap. The difference between organic soaps and standard bath soap is the all natural ingredients. Goat’s milk, olive oil, and flower essences are just a few of the ingredients that may be used to create organic soap. Each ingredient will provide a different benefit to your skin. For example, goat’s milk will moisturize and rehydrate dry skin. Soaps that include almond will naturally exfoliate. These naturally occurring ingredients make organics soaps the best choice for those with sensitive skin.

Organic bar soaps are available in health food stores. However, for those who are creative, there are recipes for making your own bath soap. Organic soaps sometimes appear at craft fairs as “handmade soap.” These are normally created using just a few natural ingredients.

Bathing with organic soaps can also be a pleasurable experience. The combination of natural ingredients, flower extracts, and oils provide soothing properties and enjoyable scents. Lavender, citrus, lemongrass, and rose are just a small sampling of the naturally sweet smelling fragrances available in organic bath soap. This means those with sensitive skin can now enjoy pleasant scents without the worries of skin irritation that is associated with synthetic fragrances.

Keep in mind the importance of choosing the right bath soap. Organic soap provides many benefits over standard soap, and is especially beneficial for those with sensitive skin. The variety of natural ingredients offers many advantages, and they serve to nourish and rejuvenate the skin. Get away from the synthetic ingredients found in regular soap and immerse yourself in all natural essential oils and flower extracts.

Treating Candida Infections with Colloidal Silver

This entry was posted in News on by .

Candida infections are the most common fungal infections that affect humans. Candida is the name for a group of yeasts (a type of fungus) that commonly infect the skin. The name ‘Candida’ refers to the white color of the organisms in culture. It is a normal inhabitant of the human digestive tract from early infancy, where it lives without causing any disease most of the time. It is normally controlled by beneficial bacteria in the intestines which act as host’s defense. However, if the bacteria-fungus balance is upset, by the use of antibiotics for example, or if the immune system is compromised, an overgrowth of Candida can occur, resulting in infection. The infection results in release of powerful chemicals into the bloodstream, causing such varying symptoms as lethargy, chronic diarrhea, yeast vaginitis, bladder infections, muscle and joint pain, menstrual problems, constipation and severe depression. Also, it can cause infection of the mucosa (the lining of the mouth, anus and genitals), the skin, and rarely, deep-seated infection. Although both men and women can have Candida infections, however it does occur more frequently in women (especially young women) with more severe effects.

Fungal infections are more common today than ever before. There are a number of reasons for this. People are living longer, and older people are more likely than younger people to have compromised immune systems, a major risk factor for fungal infection. Similarly, the widespread use of antibiotics has contributed to the growing infection rate (fungal infections are known to occur after antibiotic therapy, which has the effect of killing the beneficial bacteria that normally suppress fungi). The cases of Candida infections too are in rise. Candida species are true opportunistic pathogens that exploit recent technological advances to gain access to the circulation and deep tissues. Several other factors can lead to an overgrowth of Candida. Steroids such as Cortisone (Decadron or other cortisone-type drugs) suppress the immune system’s ability to fight Candida growth. The immune system can also be weakened in the people infected with HIV. Prolong use of contraceptive pill or injection, or pregnancy is also conducive for candida growth. The candida infection may be due to general debility e.g. from cancer or malnutrition. Another cause of Candida overgrowth can be from a low Acidophilus and Bifidus culture in the colon. It is imperative that there is enough of these two friendly bacterias in the system in order to control Candida overgrowth. Once the level of these friendly bacteria is lowered, Candida fungus takes control. Iron deficiency too is considered one of the reasons for candida infection.

Management of serious and life-threatening invasive Candida infection remains severely hampered by delays in diagnosis and the lack of reliable diagnostic methods that allow detection of both fungemia and tissue invasion by Candida species. Diagnosis of candida infection can often be accomplished by the presence of symptoms alone. To confirm the diagnosis, however, samples of the fungus have to be identified under a microscope. During this test, scrapings or smears of the tissue are taken from skin, nails, oral mucosa, and vaginal mucosa and identified with a low-powered microscopic examination, a process that gives immediate results.

Once Candida infection is diagnosed, its treatment depends on where it is located. People with skin infections are usually instructed to keep the affected areas as dry as possible until the infection has cleared. Doing so may mean changing out of a wet bathing suit or out of damp workout clothes as soon as possible. Antifungal shampoos are available, as well as antifungal mouth rinses. Infection does not always respond quickly to these treatments and may recur when topical application is discontinued.

The main theme of Candida infection treatment is strengthening of the human immune system. Colloidal silver is the right choice in this regard as it is well known for its capability of fighting against fungus infections. Colloidal silver is nothing but very fine particles of pure silver, suspended in water. Colloidal silver has antimicrobial properties. A lot of research has been done recently on its functioning. Certain bacteria are essential to healthy body function, such as acidophilus. Several researchers claim colloidal silver only attacks the unfriendly pathogens and will not harm the friendly bacteria. But one must wonder how it can possibly differentiate. One explanation is that the friendly bacteria are aerobic, while unfriendly bacteria are anaerobic. Also, it is said that the silver does not attack bacteria directly, but rather decomposes certain enzymes the anaerobic bacteria, viruses, yeast, and molds require. The silver acts as a catalyst and is not consumed in the process. It is probable that the reason the bacteria cannot develop a resistance to silver, as they do to antibiotics, is because silver does not directly them directly, but rather destroys the enzymes they depend on. This is in quite contrast to normal antibiotics, which kills friendly bacteria as well.

The germ fighting properties of colloidal silver has been adopted in soap making and such soaps are in vogue. Regular use of such soap not only helps in keeping the skin clean and healthy but also enhances the body immune system, thus preventing further infections of Candida. Even dermatologists recommend soaps with colloidal silver for the patients with candida infection. However, one must be selective while purchasing such soaps. Soaps containing colloidal silver with 20 ppm are considered the best for daily usage and they have optimum effect on fight against Candida infection.

Fractionated Coconut Oil – A Carrier Oil For Skin Care

This entry was posted in News on by .

Fractionated Coconut (Cocos nucifera) oil is a very popular oil suitable for massage therapist, aromatherapists, and manufacturers for skin care products. It is the preferred oil for high quality cold process soap making. Coconut oil is expressed under high pressure from the coconut kernel, and then filtered. It is actually solid at room temperature but melts easily at body temperature. It may cause skin sensitivity in people who have nut allergies. This article discusses its healing properties for skin care.

Coconut oil is an ingredient in many cosmetic products, especially suntan lotion, shaving creams, soaps, and some shampoos, because it lathers well and is a good conditioner for scalps.

Refined coconut oil is very close, in substance, to human subcutaneous tissue and is thus more compatible with skin than other vegetable oils. Massage therapists and aromatherapists note that it does not clog pores, making it an ideal carrier oil for troubled skin or oily skin.

What in the world does “fractionated” mean, anyway? This process removes some of the saturated fatty acids from the oil by heat, to make it softer and more liquid, while also taming it’s overwhelming natural odor. (This is not hydrogenation, which actually forces hydrogen into oils making them more solid). Some naturalists question if fractionated oils should be used since it is not a “whole product”. Most aromatherapist prefer natural oils. Certainly this is true for essential oils. However, many find that fractionated coconut oil has proved very satisfactory as a carrier, and prefer it to the unrefined oil, which tends to go rancid more quickly.

Coconut oil is an edible oil that has been consumed in tropical places for thousands of years and was prevalent in the United States as a favorite in the baking industry. However the campaign against saturated fats led to many manufacturers abandoning coconut oil.

Coconut oil is perfect for moisturizing both hands and body. It is light and easily absorbed into the skin, leaving it satin smooth. It can also be used as an intensive treatment to moisturize and condition brittle, dull or dry hair. It is great to use in or after a bath or shower for moisturizing the skin. It is a wonderful oil to use after sunning. It is excellent for scalp treatments. Massage it into the scalp and leave it on as long as possible. Some use it as a replacement for their conditioner. It can also be used for dryness, itching, and for sensitive skin.

If stored properly (cool environment out of direct light) its shelf life is very long. Its light texture makes it a good oil to use when heavier oils seem too sticky on the skin. It will also easily wash out of sheets and towels, making it a favorite of massage therapists. It may cause sensitivity in individuals who have nut allergies.

Beeswax Vs Paraffin Wax – Which is Better?

This entry was posted in News on by .

Beeswax is a natural wax produced in the bee hive of honey bees. It is the worker bees, the females, that create this wax, to build honeycomb cells for three purposes; raising their young, storing honey, and pollen. It takes eight times the consumption in honey to create the wax. It is estimated that bees fly 150,000 miles to create one pound of bees wax.

It is the type of flowers gathered by the bees that determines the color of the wax, from a white to brown, most often a shade of yellow. The color of beeswax is at first white and then darkens with age and use. This is especially true if it is used to raise the young bees. The color has no significance as to the quality of the wax (other than its esthetic appeal). Formerly, bees wax was bleached using ozonisation, sulphuric acid, or hydrogen peroxide which resulted in the addition of chemicals into the wax. Bleaching has now been stopped by reputable candle manufacturers and other suppliers of this natural wax.

60% of total beeswax is used to make candles, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. It is also used in polishing materials for shoes, furniture, models, pool table filler, and as a protective coating for aging cheese. Bees wax can be softened with vegetable oil to make it softer and more workable.

The most important aspect of bees wax, besides the naturalness, is that they burn brighter, longer, and cleaner than any other candle! The flame virtually emits the same light spectrum as the sun and in the process of burning, negative ions (which is a positive thing) are released to clean the air and invigorate the body. The negative ions is what the air smells like after a storm.

This 100% natural fuel created by bees is naturally scented by the honey and nectar of flowers packed into the honeycombs and gives off a subtle fragrance as it burns. If the bees wax has a medicinal smell, chances are that it has been chemically altered or bleached. Always check for 100% beeswax, for the legalities on labeling these candles states that a mere 55% content can be called ‘beeswax’, and for soy candles, a minimum amount of 20% soy wax can allow for those type of candles to be called ‘soy’.

Beeswax vs. Paraffin:

Beeswax is a 100% natural fuel created by bees;

– burns cleaner than any other,

– burns longer than others and do not drip,

– emits a bright light that has the same light spectrum as the sun,

– emits negative ions that actually clean the air and invigorate the body,

– are naturally scented by the honey and nectar of flowers packed into the honeycomb within the beehive.

– come from a renewable resource.

Paraffin candles come from a nonrenewable resource: petroleum, a.k.a. crude oil;

– give off many of the same toxic fumes as are found in auto exhaust,

– are relatively short burning and drip excessively,

– is a toxic byproduct of the oil industry.

– produce a disorganized light spectrum very similar to old-fashioned incandescent bulbs,

– produce toxic petrol-soot that eventually stains all interior surfaces,

– typically contain artificial fragrances and colors which also produce toxins and stains when burned.

The wick is just as important as the type of wax. When you burn a chemically processed or metallically reinforced wick, it can release large amounts of soot into the air you breathe, possibly causing harmful health side effects. The metals and chemicals in these wicks are bleach, petroleum products, lead and zinc, which are released into the air for you to inhale.

Also look for 100% unbleached cotton wicks. One way to test the wick is to drag it or rub it on a piece of white paper, any metals will leave a mark on the paper.

Bees Wax is often used in soap making as well. Put the wax in with the oils at the beginning as this natural wax has a high melting point and may not fully melt if added at trace. Usually this amazing wax is added to soap for the added hardness of the final bars. The scent of honey is an added bonus! Add only 1.5 percent of wax to your total of oils and fats. Too much wax could make a sticky and gummy bar.

The Difference Between Natural Soap and Regular Soap

This entry was posted in News on by .

A lot of people are completely unaware of the difference between natural soap and regular soap. First and foremost, anytime you can get a product that is natural and organic, it is a good idea to choose that product over any other. Simply having less ingredients is a step in the right direction. Even more important is the fact that natural soap is made from a chemical reaction between lye, water and oil. The lye is completely removed during the process of making the soap, but it is critical to the manufacture of the natural soap to begin with. There is no such thing as any type of soap that was made without lye. All natural soaps are made with lye, oil and water. The different types of oil you can use are almost infinite, as each type of oil has its own properties and will make the soap be slightly different from other soaps. This is what makes homemade soaps unique.

The problem with our soaps is that most of the conventional soaps that you buy in the grocery store or Department store are not soap at all. Rather, they are detergents, made from petroleum, like motor oil or gasoline. This is why so many people have problems with regular soap from the grocery store causing irritation of the skin and other problems. In some cases, individuals have extreme problems with these types of petroleum products and suffer from horrible irritation. The most common irritant in the soap is called alkali. This compound does not exist in natural soap and causes irritation and dry skin in many people. If you have ever felt that your skin was tight, itchy or flaky, it is very likely due to the amount of alkali in your detergent-based soap. Switching to a natural, organic soap will make all the difference in the world and will not cost you that much more unless you decide to buy one of the higher quality soaps.

One of the indications that you have a natural soap and not a regular soap is the high levels of glycerin that most natural soaps have. While many soap manufacturers extract the glycerin to use for lotions and other beautifying products, a high quality soap still retains all the glycerin, the compound which soothes and moisturizes the skin. Since glycerin pulls moisture right out of the air, your skin tends to stay moist and soft for an extended period of time, especially when compared with the detergent-based soaps. Other harmful ingredients that are included in detergent-based soaps are isopropyl alcohol, BHT and Tricoslan, which is very common in antibacterial detergent-based soaps. None of these chemicals are particularly good for your skin, making it a good idea to steer clear of detergent-based soaps and stick with natural soap.

With all the benefits of natural soap, it is not surprising that there is such a tremendous level of interest that continues to grow as people become more and more aware of the benefits of these natural products and the differences between natural soap and regular soap.

Banana Oil – Homemade Skin Care

Use this oil for making homemade lip balms. The sweet taste of bananas is very appealing to many people. Homemade lip balms can soothe dry, chapped and cracked lips. Their small size makes them handy to carry anywhere. You can have soft, moisturized and soothed lips with a hint of banana taste.

Use banana oil in a homemade lotion or cream. It’s found in many commercial suntan products. It’s antioxidants benefits help protect against environmental pollutants, that can be damaging to the skin. Skin can be moisturized, soft and protected with banana oil.

Glycerine – Industrial Applications and Facts

This entry was posted in News on by .

Glycerine is commonly called glycerol or glycerin. It is a sweet-tasting alcohol that is colorless and odorless. It becomes a gummy paste when frozen, although freezing it can only be achieved at very low temperatures. It melts at 18 degrees Celsius and boils at 290 degrees Celsius. Its chemical formula is C3H8O3. It is miscible in water and alcohol. However, it does not mix with oil. It is an excellent solvent. In fact, there are substances that dissolve better in glycerol than in water or alcohol.

The compound absorbs water from the air. This is why it is known as a hygroscopic substance. Suppose you leave a container of pure glycerine or glycerol in open air, it will become diluted as it attracts water molecules. According to a speculation, a drop of this liquid in the tongue can raise a blister because it would draw out water from deep into the tongue tissue. But this remains a clever speculation.

The sweet-tasting alcohol is found in many skin moisturizing lotions and creams because of the water-retaining and water-absorbing capacity. Thus, it softens and smoothens the skin. It is believed, however, that this substance has other beneficial properties aside from simply moisturizing and attracting water molecules.

The compound originates from fats and oils. In fact, molecules of fat contain glycerol. One way to extract it from fats or oils is through saponification – a chemical reaction involving a fat and an alkali. This chemical reaction produces soap. Soap-making is a common source of this trihydric alcohol under discussion.

Extraction of glycerine from soap-making only began in 1889. Before this time, people did not know how to recover the compound. The only way to produce the compound is through candle-making using animal fats. In the year mentioned, an effective way to isolate glycerol from soap was at last discovered and later utilized. During this time and a few decades after, much of the compound went to production of nitroglycerin – a compound derived from glycerol used to make dynamites and explosives. During World War II, soap industry was not able to suffice the huge demands for the chemical. Hence, synthetic production was implemented.

The production, separation and purification of glycerol involve a tedious process. When lye (sodium hydroxide) reacts with fat, soap is produced but is in mixture with glycerin. Homemade soap does not run through intricate procedure, thus, the soap mixture contains all the glycerol that results from the reaction. Commercial soap-makers, however removes the compound from the mixture by adding salt. Salt curdles the soap, which is seen to float on top of the mixture. The floating soap is then scooped out or skimmed. This leaves the organic chemical with some impurities such as partially dissolved soap and extra salt. The trihydric chemical is then finally taken out of the mixture through distillation. It does not end here because further impurities are removed by passing the chemical into a charcoal filter or using bleaching techniques. The final product is a highly concentrated and colorless glycerin.

History has seen the making of the compound into explosives. However, it is never explosive in itself. It has to be changed into nitroglycerin first before it becomes explosive. Furthermore, nitroglycerin is not only used in explosives but is found as a medication for heart disease.

The compound has many uses. It is a preservative for fruits and food products. Lotions and creams contain this chemical as an emulsifying and moisturizing agent. In hydraulic jacks it serves as antifreeze. The antiseptic qualities of this chemical make it valuable in biological laboratories such as to preserve specimens in jars. Moisturizing soaps contain the compound. These soaps are usually clear and are easy to make.

What is the History of Stain Removers?

When your kid asks the question ‘what is the history of stain removers’, you do not really have to fumble for words. Here is an overview of use of different natural materials, soap and detergents for stain removal purposes.

The first of all stain removers is plain water. People find it is easy to wash away mud at a stream or a river.

The history of cleaning agents runs back to ancient Babylonian culture. Soap like materials were evacuated from ancient Babylonian remains. The 4500-5000 year old remains also have detailed description of making such materials. It is however not clear whether they used the fat and ash mixed material for cleaning purposes.

Egyptian, Romans, Japanese, Greek and Chinese cultures of the ancient times paid attention to cleanliness and used different materials for cleaning purposes.

Chinese used the fruit of soap-nut tree (Sapindus Mukorossi) for cleaning soft silk clothes. The nut yielded a soap-like material, which thoroughly cleans the silk and is soft on the fabric.

Soap making started in Europe in the seventh century. Soap making in Europe was mostly a family tradition and people kept the technique of soap making a secret. They used animal fat and plant oils to make soap. They also knew the technique of adding perfumes to the soap for fragrance. The soaps were used for bathing and laundry purposes. Italy, Spain and France were the leaders in soap making.

Large scale soap manufacturing began in 1791, with the invention of a process of making soda ash from common salt by a French scientist Nicholas Leblanc. Several advancements came to Leblanc method of soap. The cost and time for making soda ash became lower.

German scientists developed a method of making cleaning agents without plant oil or animal fat. This chemically synthesized material is called detergent. This is harsher than soap (that produced from fat and oil). This happened in 1916, when the availability of fat and oils was scarce.

Utilization of enzymes for detergent manufacturing was a breakthrough in detergent manufacturing. A no enzyme content detergents too are available today, but the biggest thrust is on enzyme added detergents. There is however different environmental problems associated with use of enzymes in detergents.

Further researches produced higher quality detergents at lower costs. Detergents eventually went on to surpass soap as the preferred cleaning agent.

Later researches on cleaning products were concentrated on safety of the users and environment, ease of use and lower production costs. Detergents and soaps are available as cakes, powder and in liquid form. Detergents that mix well in saline water are also readily available in the market.

That is the history of stain removers, which started off as a mixture of fat and ash or plant products, which, with advancement in research facilities has grown to such high proportions that everyone today can afford to have a stain remover of his or her choice. Precautions For Working With Lye

in the manufacture of SOAP from lye sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or potassium hydroxide (KOH), commonly known as lye, are essential ingredients to make SOAP.

However, bleach in all its forms can be very dangerous, and there are certain precedencies to be taken when working with bleach.

bleach is very dangerous if spilled. It is a corrosive material and can burn the skin, or any surface that comes in contact.

use protective equipment and clothing, to avoid burning the skin or irritation of a bleach spill.

long pants, a shirt long sleeve, latex or gloves for washing dishes, goggles, an apron of rubber, socks and shoes of all should be used when working with bleach.

make sure that children and pets – lye can be fatal if swallowed.

work in a well ventilated area, as releases lye toxic fumes when mixed with water; Mix outdoor, or wear a respiratory protective mask, if possible.

vinegar can help neutralize the lye mixture if it spilled, so you keep a bottle on hand while working with lye.

if the bleach spills on any surface – skin, furniture, etc. -wash the affected area with vinegar, then SOAP and water and rinse clean.

lye has properties deliquescent, meaning that it has a tendency to melt or dissolve when contact with outside;

is also hygroscopic, which means that it will absorb moisture from the air and lumps are formed in the dust. Any of these tenders may render bleach if it comes into contact with the open air for a long time, so you must always seal the container in which it is stored.

make sure purchase bleach that is labeled for SOAP making. Other bleach products that come in a similar way, such as food grade lye or drain opener 100% there is bleach. It is not strong enough to make SOAP with food grade lye, and draining lye is, of course, much too hard and contains many other chemicals that you don’t want on your skin.

there are some materials that should never come into contact with bleach. Do not use any container vessel heating made of aluminum, brass, bronze, chrome, iron, magnesium, zinc or anything covered with teflon. If bleach comes in contact with any of these materials, reacts with them to produce hydrogen gas, that is extremely flammable and explosive.

also, the lye must not come into contact with sugar; This mixture will produce carbon monoxide gas.

materials suitable for contact with bleach, at room temperature, are: high density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), rubber silicon, stainless steel, glass and porcelain. Stainless steel is the material better to heat vessels, which can withstand high temperatures. Plastics can soften at higher temperatures, so without the plastic has already been tested, glass or stainless steel are the best materials for mixing bowls.

because lye is a corrosive substance, any amount of that order or buy most likely is to come with a safety equipment

Data sheet or MSDS. This sheet will list:

• manufacturer or provider of risk information • •

chemical composition and potential health effects
• first aid measures
fire fighting measures
• spill measures
• handling and storage
• exposure and protection
physical and chemical properties
• stability and reactivity

toxicological information environmental information
• available considerations
transport information
• information intended

before handling lye be sure to review the MSDS, so you know how to handle, what precautions to take and what to do in case of emergency.

make SOAP by hand can be a fun, challenging and rewarding process of and constantly dentures inherent with coming into contact with bleach, taking appropriate precautions, accidents and injuries can be avoided easily.

the earliest origin of soap making is not clear. Clay tablets from as early as 2500 BC suggest SOAP was in use at that time, mainly as a support of hair style and for the treatment of wounds. Greek principles clean their pots and statues of their gods with a mixture of bleach and ash.

cleopatra used milk, honey and essential oils in your bathroom. She then cleans your skin with sand to clean, scrub also. Oils after they were released in the body in ancient Rome, they scraped off using a “strigil”, taking off with the oils of dirt.

the Gauls and Romans used tallow of goat and ash from beech to make SOAP. Roman legend says that SOAP got its name from the mount Sapo. Animal sacrifices were performed on this Hill, and rain wash fats and ashes to the ground from clay along the banks of the river. Women wash clothes there discovered that this mixture cleans the best clothes that water alone.

Roman baths came into being around the 312 BC using water from their aqueducts. Bath became popular, and by the 2nd century AD, SOAP is recommended for medicinal use and cleaning. An all SOAP making factory was discovered when Pompeii was excavated. After the fall of Rome, bathing and use SOAP decreased in Europe. This perhaps contributed to the plagues of the dark ages?

the order of the bath was instituted by King Henry IV in 1399. To participate in this order, the Knight had to venture into a bathtub full of water at least once during his cavalry. Queen Elizabeth is reported to have taken a bath every three months, if you needed it or not!

Marseille, France became a city, due to the abundant olive oil and vegetable ash in the area of prominent soap making. In the first SOAP was imported to America, but settlers soon found that he could do free SOAP using ashes from fires and fat from butchered animals. This lye SOAP was resistant in the dirt and skin.

SOAP Palmolive, made of Palm and olive oils, was in use at the beginning of 1900. In another factory, ivory SOAP was born when a worker accidentally operating the mixer of SOAP while went to lunch; incorporation of extra air in the SOAP and the creation of SOAP that floats. SOAP companies abound around the world, and no matter how SOAP came to be, can say for sure that it is here to stay.
